Donald Trump has officially used up all his rope in this trial

At the start of each Trump trial, civil or criminal, I’ve pointed out that Trump’s nonsense filings and social media antics don’t help him, they only hurt him. The reason is that not only do last minute antics fail to delay things, they also end up annoying the bejesus out of the judge.

While judges do have to remain impartial and fair no matter how distasteful they might find one side or the other, judges do have to make a lot of – it’s right their in their title – judgment calls. There are plenty of times where one side or the other needs a bit of latitude on something. In general, a judge is initially going to give a small amount of latitude to both sides. But once it’s used up, it’s used up.

Today we got official confirmation that Trump has indeed used up all of his proverbial rope in this trial. His attorneys argued that Trump should be allowed to make a public statement refuting the claims that Stormy Daniels made on the witness stand. But the judge rejected the request. He said that based on Trump’s existing social media posts about the witnesses, he can’t trust Trump to refute Daniels’ testimony without attacking her.

So there you have it. Trump’s attorneys are essentially saying Trust us, we can keep Trump in line with his social media posts about Stormy Daniels. and the judge is essentially saying Nope, Trump has already blown it.

. . .

This is why you don’t foolishly blow through your rope with the judge before the trial even gets going. At some point you’re going to need the judge to trust that you have good faith intentions on something, and the judge is going to cite your existing bad faith behavior as a basis for saying no.

  • Celebrities are having fun with wedding-inspired looks on red carpets in 2024.
  • Some stars are wearing eye-catching white gowns that would be perfect for walking down the aisle.
  • Others have worn white suits that would make for unique wedding outfits.

Red-carpet season is in full swing for 2024.

Celebrities have gathered to honor the best movies, television, music, and fashion of the year and have dressed to the nines while doing it.

Many stars have walked this year’s red carpets in white gowns and classic suits that would also work as wedding looks.

From Taylor Swift in Schiaparelli to Kylie Jenner’s Oscar de la Renta look for the Met Gala, here’s a look at some of the best bridal-inspired outfits celebrities have worn in 2024.

Elle Fanning embraced one of bridal’s biggest trends at the Golden Globes.Elle Fanning 2024 Golden GlobesElle Fanning attends the 2024 Golden Globes.

Fanning walked the Golden Globes red carpet in a Balmain gown designed in 1960, according to her stylist, Samantha McMillen. An oversize bow adorned the strapless neckline, and the A-line skirt featured an asymmetrical hem.

Bows have been big in bridal fashion over the last few years, so Fanning’s look would be perfect for a wedding.

Lee chose a cream Loewe gown for the Golden Globes, where she was nominated for her performance in “Past Lives.”

The front of the gown had a subtly scooped neckline and a mermaid skirt, creating a simple silhouette. But the back of the dress was more dynamic with its vertical bow that knotted in the middle.

Danielle Goldberg styled the look.

Jonathan Bailey’s all-white look at the Golden Globes would be fitting for a summer wedding.Jonathan Bailey at the 2024 Golden Globes on January 7 in Beverly Hills, California.Jonathan Bailey at the 2024 Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, California.

Bailey’s custom Givenchy suit consisted of an oversize jacket, high-waisted trousers, and a semi-sheer shirt with no tie. Black loafers and a watch tied it all together.

The ensemble looked formal yet relaxed.

Elizabeth Olsen wore an actual wedding dress to the 2024 Golden Globes.Elizabeth Olsen at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards on January 7, in Beverly Hills, California.Elizabeth Olsen attends the 2024 Golden Globes.

Olsen chose Vivienne Westwood’s Lyra dress from the designer’s 2023 bridal couture collection.

The white gown’s corset bodice was framed by intricate lace appliqué on the sweetheart neckline and the top of the skirt.

Another stretch of sheer lace covered the bottom of the skirt, and a delicate train flowed out from the back of the gown, adding glamour to the ensemble. Elizabeth Stewart styled the look.

If you’re torn between wearing a gown or a suit to your wedding, you could take inspiration from Ralph’s stark-white Emmys dress.

Designed by Christian Siriano and styled by her daughter Ivy Coco, the bodice looked like a low-cut suit with oversize lapels and a belt resembling double-breasted buttons.

The form-fitting skirt flared at the bottom, nodding to a more traditional bridal look.

Charlie Puth’s long jacket for the Emmys offered a fun alternative to a traditional suit. Charlie Puth Emmys 2024Charlie Puth attends the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Puth walked the Emmys red carpet in a nontraditional suit from Balmain. He paired high-waisted, white trousers and a blazer coat with a black, polka-dotted shirt made of a silky material.

The outfit would be a one-of-a-kind wedding look that still fits the occasion.

The sparkly embellishments and feather detailing on Issa Rae’s Emmys gown would stand out at a wedding.Issa Rae attends the 2024 Emmys.Issa Rae attends the 2024 Emmys.

If you want a subtle pop of color at your wedding, the Pamella Roland gown Rae chose for the Golden Globes could be the perfect dress inspiration, as its pale-yellow hue is warm without being over the top.

Feathers and sparkly embellishments covered the sheath-style gown with a high neckline. The dress had an effortlessly glamorous feel.

Ayo Edebiri rocked an all-white suit at the Critics Choice Awards.Ayo Edebiri attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.Ayo Edebiri attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.

The Row designed Edebiri’s relaxed, all-white suit, which she paired with a high-neck T-shirt thanks to her stylist, Danielle Goldberg. Black shoes, long earrings, and round, black sunglasses completed the look.

If you’re looking for a nontraditional wedding look, this suit could be perfect for you.

Russell attended the Critics Choice Awards in a high-neck gown designed by Stéphane Rolland and styled by Frank Fleming.

The dress had a straight silhouette, flowing into a dramatic train, and large ruffles ran down the center until they tapered off at the bottom. It could easily work for a bride who wanted a sophisticated look.

The “Origin” star’s custom Jovana Louis dress looked like a true suit on the bodice, with a collar, asymmetrical lapels, and a built-in tie. But it turned into a gown as it flowed down, with ruffle detailing on the long sleeves and a mermaid train.

Taraji P. Henson’s strapless gown for the Critics Choice Awards was simple and elegant. Taraji P. Henson attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.Taraji P. Henson attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.

Boss designed Henson’s custom white gown, which Wayman + Micah styled for her.

The strapless gown was fairly simple, but a fold on the neckline and a coordinating scooped belt at the waist gave it a modern structure. A thigh-high slit and a train gave it a boost of drama.

Fantasia Barrino rocked the bridal cape trend at the Critics Choice Awards.Fantasia Barrino attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.Fantasia Barrino attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.

Like Henson, Barrino chose a strapless, white gown for the event. But she paired her dress, designed by Alin Le’ Kal, with a massive feathered cape.

It sat on her shoulders and flowed down around her like a train, fitting right into the bridal cape trend that has been popular in recent years. The cape’s volume contrasted perfectly with the structured dress.

Allison Howell Williams’ strapless jumpsuit could be a perfect alternative to a wedding gown.Allison Howell Williams attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.Allison Howell Williams attends the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.

Zuhair Murad designed the white jumpsuit Williams wore to the Critics Choice Awards.

Two lapels formed a point in the strapless neckline, and a belt cinched Williams’ waist before flowing into tapered pants. Sparkly embellishments on the bodice added a pop of glamour to the look, which Cristina Ehrlich styled with silver jewelry.

Taylor Swift’s white Grammys dress featured a thigh-high slit and a bold train. Taylor Swift attends the 2024 Grammy Awards.Taylor Swift attends the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Swift walked the Grammys red carpet in a strapless Schiaparelli gown styled by Joseph Cassell. Ruching collected on one of Swift’s hips, cutting into a slit and a dramatic train.

The star paired the dress with black gloves and shoes, giving it a red-carpet edge, but the gown could easily translate to a bridal look, too.

Summer Walker’s all-white, textured gown coordinated with her hat.Summer Walker attends the 2024 Grammy AwardsSummer Walker attends the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Usama Ishtay styled Walker’s ensemble for the Grammys.

Her strapless gown was form-fitting and had a corset bodice. But the simple silhouette contrasted with the sparkly, white feathers that covered the dress from head to toe. A coordinating, oversize hat completed the look.

Olivia Rodrigo’s vintage Grammys dress featured subtle sparkles.Olivia Rodrigo attends the 2024 Grammy AwardsOlivia Rodrigo attends the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Rodrigo donned a vintage Versace gown from 1995 at the Grammys.

The silky cream dress had a sweetheart neckline and spaghetti straps, and delicate, pink beading adorned it. A bride looking for a hint of sparkle would love the gown.

Boygenius’ coordinating suits included a delicate pop of color.Boygenius (Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus) attends the 2024 Grammy AwardsBoygenius (Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus) attends the 2024 Grammy Awards.

White suits are a classic wedding ensemble, and the members of Boygenius offered a fresh take on the look with their Grammys outfits.

Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus wore matching custom suits designed by Thom Browne for the event.

They paired their cropped jackets and high-waisted pants with black ties, black shoes, and pink flowers on their lapels, bringing a bit of color to their ensembles.

Kat Graham’s dress had an elegant cape and illusion detailing.Kat Graham attends the 2024 Grammys.Kat Graham attends the 2024 Grammys.

Graham’s Stéphane Rolland gown was one of the most daring white dresses on the Grammys red carpet.

An angular cape made up the top of the bodice, flowing over Graham’s chest. The gown hugged her figure, and half of the bodice was made of sheer fabric, cutting across her middle.

White gloves brought elegance to the modern look.

Clarkson’s white Jason Wu Collection dress hugged her figure, flowing out gently around her feet.

Her gown sat off her shoulders, and the fabric cut across the bodice to create structure. If you added a veil, the look could instantly become bridal.

Kirsten Dunst walked the Oscars red carpet in a minimalist white dress.Kirsten Dunst attends the 2024 Oscars.Kirsten Dunst attends the 2024 Oscars.

Dunst’s Gucci gown for the Oscars had spaghetti straps and a square neckline, which formed subtle cutouts on the sides of the bodice.

The gown subtly cinched on Dunst’s waist before flowing to the floor, creating a silhouette a modern bride would love.

Lawrence donned an archival Givenchy gown for the after-party.

The empire-waist gown was made of a sheer, white fabric adorned with four-leaf clover appliqué from head to toe. The cap sleeves and collar featured ruffled hems, and an elegant train flowed out behind her.

The completely transparent fabric might be too daring for some brides, but a less sheer version of the vintage gown would be fit for a wedding.

The Jacquemus dress Emily Ratajkowski wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars party had architectural detailing a bold bride would like. Emily Ratajkowski attends the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party.Emily Ratajkowski attends the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars after-party.

Ratajkowski’s white dress had an open back, and the strapless neckline floated in front of her, leaving her sides open.

A semi-sheer train was attached to the column skirt, adding an elegant touch to the modern look.

A plunging neckline added drama to Phoebe Dynevor’s silky dress for the BAFTAs.Phoebe Dynevor attends the 2024 BAFTAs.Phoebe Dynevor attends the 2024 BAFTAs.

The “Bridgerton” star chose a Louis Vuitton dress for the 2024 BAFTAs.

The gown’s silky material and train gave it a vintage feel, while the plunging halter neckline and open back added a modern touch.

The bow that doubled as a train on Hari Nef’s sparkly Met Gala dress had a bridal look.Hari Nef attends the 2024 Met Gala.Hari Nef attends the 2024 Met Gala.

H&M designed the column dress Nef wore to the Met Gala.

The strapless gown was covered in large sequins that felt both festive and elegant, and an oversize bow turned into a train at the back.

It was a great red-carpet choice, but the gown wouldn’t look out of place at a wedding with a party vibe, either.

Kylie Jenner’s Oscar de la Renta dress made the Met Gala red carpet look like a wedding aisle.Kylie Jenner attends the 2024 Met GalaKylie Jenner attends the 2024 Met Gala.

The strapless gown was blush, and it hit Jenner at the ankle. Triangular boning and a diamond cutout in the bodice added retro energy to the look, while a train attached to the skirt added glamour.

Her shoes coordinated with the look, much like a bride’s would for a wedding.

Kris Jenner’s coat jacket for the Met Gala felt like an alternative to a veil, while the accessories on Cory Gamble’s all-white suit elevated his look. Kris Jenner and Cory Gamble attend the 2024 Met GalaKris Jenner and Cory Gamble attend the 2024 Met Gala.

Like her daughter, Kris Jenner wore Oscar de la Renta to the 2024 Met Gala, selecting a white gown and a coordinating coat.

The coat featured floral detailing on the collar and lapel, and Jenner paired it with white gloves for a seamless look.

Together, Jenner and Gamble looked every bit the bride and groom in their all-white looks.

Michelle Williams’ Met Gala gown was made of delicate tulle.Michelle Williams attends the 2024 Met GalaMichelle Williams attends the 2024 Met Gala.

Williams chose a Chanel look for fashion’s biggest night.

The off-the-shoulder dress was short and textured, contrasting with the semi-sheer bubble sleeves and coordinating train flowing out from the gown’s back.

The train had a distinctly bridal look.

Ariana Grande chose a pearl-encrusted dress for the Met Gala.Ariana Grande attends the 2024 Met GalaAriana Grande attends the 2024 Met Gala.

Loewe designed Grande’s gown with a fitted corset bodice and a natural waist.

Vogue reported the corset was made of mother of pearl, and it featured an intricate beading pattern.

A semi-sheer tulle skirt in shades of white and gray contrasted with the ornate fabric, and a bow flowed down her back much like a veil would for a bride.

Several killed after residents of Afghan province protest orders from Taliban

islamabad — At least four people were reported killed on Thursday during clashes between protesters and Taliban security forces in eastern Afghanistan.

Residents in Nangarhar province, which borders Pakistan, held a demonstration after being told by Taliban authorities to vacate their homes for the construction of a customs clearing facility, according to witnesses and officials.

Protesters blocked a busy highway linking Afghanistan to Pakistan and refused to allow the destruction of their properties. Taliban security forces fired gunshots to disperse the crowd and clear the highway to allow trade convoys to resume their journey in both directions, eyewitnesses reported.

An area information and culture department spokesperson confirmed the clashes, saying residents “created chaos in response” to the official order. Arafat Mohajer said that the violence resulted in the death of a Taliban officer and “a number of people who were occupying the [state[ land [illegally].” He did not share further details.

Protesters refuted the official claims, saying they had the deeds and owned the land.

A resident in Jalalabad, the provincial capital, confirmed to VOA by phone that firing by Taliban security forces killed three protesters.

The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan three years ago and faced no public opposition to their hard-line policies until this month.

Last week, farmers and residents took to the streets in northeastern Badakhshan province to protest the eradication of poppy fields by the Taliban counternarcotics units.

Security forces opened fire to disperse the demonstrators, killing two people.

Hibatullah Akhundzada, the reclusive Taliban supreme leader, has imposed a nationwide ban on poppy cultivation and production, usage, transportation and trade of all illicit drugs in Afghanistan.

Chilean court dismisses Pandora probe into deceased former President Sebastián Piñera

A Chilean court has definitively dismissed a criminal case against two-time former President Sebastián Piñera stemming from the International Consortium of Investigation’s 2021 Pandora Papers investigation.

Piñera, who died in a helicopter crash in February, was under investigation for suspected bribery related to the 2010 sale of his family’s stake in an iron and copper mining project, Minera Dominga, to his associate Carlos Alberto Délano.

ICIJ’s partners, the Chilean Center for Investigative Reporting (CIPER) and Labot, reported that Piñera was linked to several offshore deals, including a contract to sell some of his children’s shares in Minera Dominga through a British Virgin Islands-registered shell company for $138 million paid over three installments.

The final payment of $9.9 million was contingent on the government avoiding regulatory steps that could block a separate proposed mining project, CIPER and Labot found. The outlets did not confirm if the payment was made and Piñera was never charged with a crime.

The controversial Minera Dominga mining project, which became a flashpoint in Chilean politics, was rejected by lawmakers in January 2023 over environmental concerns.

On May 9, the 7th Guarantee Court of Santiago declared that the deal did not “constitute a crime,” rejecting a request by one of the complainants to reopen the case, which was previously dismissed in February shortly after Piñera’s death, according to La Tercera.

“[The request] should be understood as exhausted,” Judge Freddy Cubillos Jofré said in the ruling.

He added that: “the execution of the contract in the [British] Virgin Islands was justified by the nature of the business, being regulated both in its form, requirements and taxation in national legislation … .”

In November 2021, Piñera’s leadership survived an impeachment bid by opposition lawmakers, which succeeded in Chile’s lower house but ultimately failed to achieve the supermajority of votes needed to pass in the Senate.

At the time his, attorney Jorge Gálvez blasted the proceedings as “purely political.”

Piñera, a billionaire who ran three times for the presidency, and left office in 2022, was one of three sitting Latin American presidents whose offshore dealings were exposed in the Pandora Papers, based on a trove of nearly 12 million leaked files.

His sudden accidental death drew condolences from current and former world leaders from across the political spectrum, including U.S. President Joe Biden who praised Piñera for his commitment to “forging a more secure and prosperous future for Chile.”

Two Skiers Killed in Utah Avalanche Following Spring Snowstorms, Sheriff Says

Utah Avalanche

(SANDY, Utah) — Two backcountry skiers were killed and one was rescued after an avalanche Thursday in the mountains outside of Salt Lake City that occurred after several days of spring snowstorms, authorities said.

A rescue team responded just after 10 a.m. to an avalanche reported near Lone Peak in the Wasatch Range southeast of Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

One of the skiers, who was able to dig himself out of the snow, had been rescued by midday and was taken to the hospital, Rivera said.

A rescue team in a helicopter flew over the area Thursday afternoon and confirmed the other two men were deceased, Rivera said. They are two men, ages 23 and 32. Their names have not been released.

Conditions were not safe enough to allow for a recovery on Thursday, and crews planned to go out Friday morning, weather permitting, Rivera said.

Rivera said she believed the man who was rescued was the one who called for help. Officers were speaking with him at the hospital to get more information about what happened, the sheriff said.

The skiers hiked into the area Thursday morning, she said.

Craig Gordon with the Utah Avalanche Center said about 2.5 feet (76 centimeters) of heavy, wet snow fell in the area in the past three days.

The skiers would have had to have been very experienced to even be in the “very serious terrain,” he said.

At least 15 people have been killed in avalanches in the U.S. so far this winter. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which keeps track of the figure nationally, tallied 13 deaths before authorities announced Thursday’s fatalities.
