The Wicked Teaser Is Finally Here—And People Have a Lot of Opinions

Wicked Teaser

Ever since the Wicked movie musical was announced, fervent fans of the long-running stage musical have been excitedly awaiting a glimpse of the Jon M. Chu-directed adaptation. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are set to star as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, joined by a star-studded cast that includes Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Bowen Yang, and Ethan Slater. The minute-long teaser was released shortly after Super Bowl LVIII started and garnered an enthusiastic reaction from social media users.

There wasn’t much dialogue in the trailer, but there was one musical moment in particular that prompted a conversation on social media. At the end of the teaser trailer, we can hear Erivo’s ending riff of one of the show’s most well-known numbers, “Defying Gravity.” Her rendition introduces some slight changes to the version popularized by Idina Menzel, and the new take divided fans of the musical. “Cynthia’s Defying Gravity climax had me shouting in this apartment,” one person wrote on X.

“This looks incredible, although I’m not sure how I feel about Cynthia’s run at the end of Defying Gravity,” another person wrote.

Shortly after the teaser trailer was released, Vanity Fair released the first interview with Erivo and Grande, where they talked about the making of the movie. Producer Marc Platt spoke to the decision to cut the movie into two parts. “We didn’t want to end up making one four-hour movie and then cutting out songs,” he said. “We want to satisfy the fans of the musical.” Some fans opined that the musical’s better songs are in its first half.

it’s gonna be great when Wicked part 2 comes out, and we all get to enjoy such musical song hits as “morality is complicated” and “everyone is older and sadder now”

— Patrick Lenton (@PatrickLenton) February 12, 2024

Wicked is beloved among the theater community and one of the most successful musicals ever to hit the Great White Way, so any changes are sure to inspire conversation. The original show made its debut on Broadway in 2003, and last year, the show celebrated its 20th anniversary. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel originated the roles of Glinda and Elphaba. The story, adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, essentially serves as a prequel to the Wicked Witch of the West’s story in The Wizard of Oz and follows the two witches who become friends and later rivals.

Beyoncé Drops New Singles, Announces Forthcoming Album Act II Following Super Bowl Verizon Commercial

66th GRAMMY Awards - Show

In the middle of the Super Bowl, Beyoncé released two new singles, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages,” on Tidal and announced a new album that will be released on March 29.

[time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”]

Beyoncé dropped the singles on Tidal after her Verizon commercial, which aired during the Super Bowl, appeared to tease new music.

After the ad aired on Sunday, Beyoncé posted a video on Instagram featuring a snippet of new music with a country sound. At the end of the video, text appears that reads: “Act II, 3/29.” It seems safe to say that this could be a new album, as her 2022 project, Renaissance, was referred to as Act I.

In the Verizon ad, Beyoncé appeared with Tony Hale, working to “break the internet” and Verizon through gradually bigger stunts. She opens up a lemonade stand (a nod to her 2016 album), drops a surprise (a reference to her 2013 self-titled album), and launches a Twitch stream, as well as BeyoncAI and BarBey. She also announces that she’s running for Beyoncé of the United States, before ending with a performance in space. The commercial ends with Beyoncé saying, “OK, drop the music.”

Instantly, X was flooded with questioning fans trying to figure out what was going on and “Act II” and “Beyoncé” trending.

All the Highlights From Usher’s Exhilarating Super Bowl Halftime Show

Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers may have had a fierce showdown with Super Bowl LVIII, but make no mistake about it—the biggest star of the night was Usher, whose thrilling halftime show sent the message that after 30 years in the business, the singer is still the undisputed King of R&B. The 45-year-old artist, who released his ninth studio album, Coming Home, just days before the performance, drew on his three-decade career to deliver a show that reaffirmed that Usher is truly an unparalleled performer.

The singer, who just wrapped up a sold-out 100-show Las Vegas residency (which was so popular, it got extended twice), put on a flashy performance of epic proportions that included a number of surprises, including Usher dancing on roller skates, a marching band that spelled out his name, and surprise appearances from collaborators like Jermaine Dupri, Lil Jon, Ludacris, Alicia Keys,, and H.E.R.

Ahead of the performance, Usher acknowledged that his sizable body of work and many years in the music industry made it tough to come up with a set list that could encapsulate his career in just 13 minutes on the Super Bowl halftime show stage.

“I was very mindful of my past, celebrating my present, which is here in Las Vegas, and thinking about where we are headed in the future,” he said in an Apple Music press conference leading up to the performance. ““What songs do people know me for? What songs have been a celebration of [my career]? That was the idea.”

Here are the highlights from Usher’s Super Bowl LVIII halftime show.

What songs did Usher perform?

Usher drew on the broad range of his discography by performing an extensive medley consisting of 11 songs. He opened the show by dancing on the field with an ensemble of acrobatic dancers, while singing his 2004 hit, “Caught Up,” before transitioning into his song “U Don’t Have to Call.” Later, when he moved to the stage, he sang “Superstar” before breaking into his dance anthem, “Love in This Club,” which he performed while doing the moonwalk. He followed that with a duet of “My Boo” with Alicia Keys, before moving into the ballad section of the performance, where he sang beloved tracks like “Confessions,” “Burn,” and “U Got It Bad.” Singer H.E.R., who has a song, “Risk It All,” with Usher that appears on his new album, Coming Home, performed a guitar solo during the performance of “Bad Girl,” while showed up to sing “OMG.” Usher closed out his standout show with a rousing performance of “Yeah!” alongside longtime collaborators Ludacris and Lil Jon.

Who did Usher bring out during the halftime show?

When it came to guest performers, Usher drew on the wealth of collaborations he’s had over the course of his long career. His first guest performer of the night was Alicia Keys, who appeared on the stage in a sparkling all-red ensemble, playing a matching red grand piano and singing her 2003 song, “If I Ain’t Got You,” before joining Usher for a romantic duet of “My Boo.” Later, Usher’s longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri made a cameo, before H.E.R. performed a guitar solo for “U Got It Bad” and “Bad Girl.” Rapper joined Usher on stage for a memorable performance of “OMG,” that ended with Usher skating through’s legs. The final guest performances of the night were Ludacris and Lil Jon, two fellow Atlanta legends, who showed up and showed out for a triumphant rendition of “Yeah!”

What did Usher wear during his performance?

While Usher wore a white bejeweled suit by Dolce & Gabbana to begin the performance, he later shed the outfit, piece by piece, until he performed his song “U Got It Bad,” shirtless, surely to the delight of many attendees at the Super Bowl arena and audiences at home. For his second outfit of the night, Usher donned a glittery black and royal blue Off-White motocross outfit adorned with 340,000 crystals, which he wore to dance while roller skating, before changing into a pair of custom chrome Air Jordan 4s by the Shoe Surgeon.

How did fans respond to his performance online?

Online, fans watching Usher’s performance were enthralled by the show. Writer Hunter Harris, who profiled Usher, aptly summed up what many were feeling, tweeting that “we are all Keke Palmer tonight,” in reference to the viral moment that took place this summer when Palmer was filmed enjoying herself at Usher’s Las Vegas residency.

we are all keke palmer tonight

Music critic Lindsay Zoladz applauded the performance on Twitter, with the sentiment: “That’s entertainment!”

However, the best review of the night may have come from actor Danny DeVito, who took to Twitter to give Usher his flowers.

India Says Qatar Freed Eight Ex-Navy Personnel

New Delhi — India’s foreign ministry said Monday that Qatar had freed eight ex-navy personnel it had previously arrested and sentenced to death, reportedly for spying for Israel.

The foreign ministry never gave details on the eight Indian nationals or their alleged crimes, and Qatar has not commented on the case or made the charges public.

But Indian media have reported that the men,  among them former high-ranking and decorated officers, including captains who once commanded warships, were arrested in Doha in August 2022.

In October, India said it was “shocked” after a Qatari court had sentenced them to death, but the sentence was reduced in December.

The eight men were employees of Al Dahra, a Gulf-based company that offers “complete support solutions” to the aerospace, security and defense sectors, according to its website.

The Hindu newspaper reported the men were spying for a “third country,” while the Times of India has said that “various reports claimed they were accused of spying for Israel.”

On Monday, New Delhi said the men had all been released.

“The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for the Dahra Global company who were detained in Qatar,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“Seven out of the eight of them have returned to India,” it added, thanking Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for the decision “to enable the release and homecoming” of the detainees.
