States that have instituted abortion bans in a post-Roe world have opened a Pandora’s box. Not only are such states refusing to trust women to make informed decisions about their own body and placing their lives at risk, but they are failing women in other disturbing ways.

Idaho, which has had a near-total abortion ban since August 2022, is a prime example. As with other such states, Idaho has seen an exodus or early retirement of OB-GYNs. This development has led to an additional problem, which is a lack of screening patients for domestic abuse. OB-GYNs are typically the first, if not the only, doctors to learn if a patient is suffering at the hands of a violent partner, according to a report from The 19th.

Both the federal government and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend that physicians screen women for signs that they may be experiencing violence at home, according to the report. Also, polls show that patients are more likely to disclose personal information with their OB-GYNs. However, far fewer providers are now screening for domestic abuse in Idaho, making it more difficult for people to come forward for help.

Another harmful consequence of Idaho’s abortion ban is a lack of maternity care for pregnant women (regardless of whether they want an abortion). Women who can’t access hospitals with obstetrics care are more likely to experience preterm birth and risk asthma, hearing loss, intellectual disabilities and more, according to a report from NBC News.

When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Idaho Republican Gov. Brad Little insisted that everyone should “absolutely… come together like never before to support women and teens facing unexpected or unwanted pregnancies.” However, Idaho has since disbanded a committee that investigated the root causes of maternal death, failed to expand postpartum Medicaid coverage, and rejected federal grants for child care, according to an investigation by ProPublica.

The situation in Idaho is a tragic advertisement of what can happen when a draconian abortion ban meets Republican “leadership.” Nowhere in America should women be treated with such shockingly little dignity, first denying them rights, then failing to make good on promises of basic support. The GOP keeps finding new ways to fail.

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the death of George Floyd, is expected to survive following an attack in a prison in Arizona on Friday, according to a spokesperson from the Minnesota Attorney General’s office.

The Associated Press earlier reported Chauvin had been stabbed and seriously injured on Friday.

“I am sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence,” Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said in an emailed statement on Saturday.

“He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence.

Ellison did not give further details.

In a statement on Sunday, Attorney General’s Office spokesperson Brian Evans said regarding Chauvin’s condition: “We have heard that he is expected to survive.”

Chauvin is serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights, as well as a concurrent 22-1/2 years for murder on his conviction in Minnesota state court.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed an unidentified inmate was assaulted at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. It said employees “initiated life-saving measures” for one individual, who was taken by emergency medical services to a hospital. A spokesperson for the Bureau of Prisons said it was not providing the name of the victim or their medical status due to privacy reasons.

Floyd’s death in 2020 unleashed protests worldwide against police brutality and racism after Chauvin, who is white, knelt on the neck of the handcuffed Black man for more than nine minutes in a murder caught on cellphone video.

4 Employees of Germany’s Main Aid Agency Arrested in Afghanistan

Taliban authorities in Afghanistan arrested four local employees of Germany’s main government-owned aid agency, according to the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

“I can confirm that the local employees of GIZ are in custody although we have not received any official information on why they are detained,” a ministry spokesperson told the Associated Press in a statement late Saturday.

“We are taking this situation very seriously and are working through all channels available to us to ensure that our colleagues are released,” she added.

The German Agency for International Cooperation, or GIZ, is owned by the German government. It operates in around 120 countries worldwide, offering projects and services in the areas of “economic development, employment promotion, energy and the environment, and peace and security,” according to the agency’s website.

The Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021, after the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces from the country. Many foreign missions, including the German embassy in Kabul, closed their offices.

The Taliban initially promised a more moderate approach than during their previous rule from 1996 to 2001 but gradually reimposed their harsh interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia.

Girls were banned from education beyond the sixth grade and women were barred from working, studying, traveling without a male companion, and even going to parks or bathhouses and were forced to cover up from head to toe.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said in September that human rights are in a state of collapse in Afghanistan more than two years following the Taliban’s return to power and stripped back institutional protections at all levels.

China Opens Probe of Indebted Asset Management Firm

Chinese police have opened an investigation into Zhongzhi Enterprise Group after the debt-ridden financial giant declared itself insolvent.

Police in Beijing, where the group is headquartered, said late Saturday they had opened an investigation into unspecified “alleged offenses,” adding that they had taken measures against several suspects.

Zhongzhi declared itself insolvent Wednesday with its arrears estimated at nearly $66 billion, according to a letter to investors cited by local media.

During China’s real estate boom, many developers used Zhongzhi to finance their projects.

The company managed assets worth more than $141 billion, according to investment bank Nomura.

But the group has been caught up in China’s real estate crisis, leaving it now unable to repay investors.

Zhongzhi’s bankruptcy raises fears of far-reaching consequences for China’s financial system following the downward spiral of property developer Evergrande, whose troubles continue to take a toll on the country’s real estate sector and the economy.
