ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams, suspended for the first six games of the season, said he was unaware of the NFL gambling policy that he violated.
“It hit me out the blue,” Williams told reporters Thursday. “And, it hit a couple other players around the league and on my team out the blue.”
The league suspended former Lions players Quintez Cephus and C.J. Moore, along with Washington’s Shaka Toney, for the entire 2023 season in April for betting on NFL games last year, adding they may petition for reinstatement.
Williams, the No. 12 pick overall in 2022, and teammate Stanley Berryhill were benched for six games for betting on non-NFL games at a league facility.
“I wasn’t aware of this situation,” Williams said, insisting he didn’t recall what he bet on or where he gambled.
The former Alabama star, who missed much of his rookie season with a knee injury, said he was informed of the suspension a day before it was announced last month.
“I was sick,” he recalled. “I was hurt.”
Violations of the league’s gambling have been rare in recent years. Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley was suspended for the entire 2022 season for gambling on NFL games and was later reinstated. In 2019, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Josh Shaw was suspended for gambling on an NFL game and he has not played in the league since.
“It’s an emphasis on the league right now,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “It’s a big thing. Our players know. We’ve tried to hammer it home. Certainly, we did after that point and a few more times and we’ll keep doing it.
Even though Williams said he was unaware of the NFL’s rules on gambling, he accepted responsibility for his costly actions.
“I broke a policy,” he said. “I pretty much looked past those things.”
NOTES: The Lions created a competition at kicker, acquiring Riley Patterson from Jacksonville for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2026 to push or perhaps replace Michael Badgley. … RB David Montgomery and LB Malcom Rodriguez left Thursday’s workout with injuries. Montgomery, signed in the offseason to an $18 million, three-year contract, appeared to hurt his lower left leg in a non-contact drill.

- The DOJ is investigating Donald Trump’s handling of classified White House documents.
- Sources told WaPo that there may be evidence of possible obstruction.
- Workers helped move boxes of documents the day before the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago, per WaPo.
Donald Trump and his team may have prepared to move sensitive White House documents months before the FBI raided the Mar-a-Lago resort last August, according to a report from The Washington Post.
Sources familiar with the Justice Department’s investigation alleged to The Post that the former president’s aides performed a “dress rehearsal” for moving the documents even before the DOJ shared a grand jury subpoena requesting all classified records back in May.
FBI agents seized thousands of government documents, some of them marked confidential, from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last August. The DOJ’s probe entered a new phase in March after Special Counsel Jack Smith subpoenaed dozens of Mar-a-Lago staffers, but movement in the investigation has been quiet in recent weeks. ABC News reported that Smith may be wrapping up the investigation as he decides whether to charge the former president.
Some of the charges could include wrongful possession of government documents and obstructing the government’s efforts to retrieve the material.
On top of the aides’ alleged preparation for moving sensitive documents, two of Trump’s employees moved boxes of documents a day before FBI agents and a prosecutor met with Trump’s lawyer in Mar-a-Lago last June to retrieve any material, the sources told The Post.
One of the employees was a maintenance worker at the resort who offered to help a Trump aide, Walt Nauta, with moving the boxes, a source familiar with the matter told The New York Times. The maintenance worker did not know the content of the boxes, the source said.
Nauta was caught on security camera moving boxes out of a storage room in Mar-a-Lago before and after the Justice Department issued the May subpoena, The Times previously reported.
Federal prosecutors also have evidence that Trump kept classified documents out in the open in his office at Mar-a-Lago and sometimes showed them to other people, sources told The Post.
Trump’s spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. He has previously denied any wrongdoing regarding his handling of classified documents.

- Elon Musk’s Neuralink said Thursday it got FDA approval to conduct a “first-in-human clinical study.”
- So far the company has only tested the brain implants on animals, such as pigs and monkeys.
- Neuralink says the brain chips could allow people to complete tasks using only their minds.
Elon Musk finally got approval from the Food and Drug Administration to start implanting his company’s brain chips in humans, Neuralink announced Thursday.
Neuralink, which was founded by Musk in 2016, said on Twitter it received FDA approval to launch its “first-in-human clinical study.” The company added “recruitment is not yet open” to participate in the clinical trial, but that they’d be sharing more information on that soon.
In March the FDA rejected Neuralink’s request for approval to being human testing, citing several concerns that would first need to be addressed, Reuters reported at the time. Among the safety concerns were that the brain chip wires could move around or that the chip could overheat.
So far Neuralink has only tested the brain chips on animals, including pigs and monkeys.
Neuralink says its brain chips could allow people to complete tasks using only their minds and help treat certain medical conditions.
