Asia shares mostly higher, focus on US bank data

Asian shares crept higher on Monday as investors braced for a week where U.S. inflation data will test wagers the next move in interest rates will be down, while worries about a possible credit crunch weighed on the dollar.

Friday’s robust U.S. payrolls report has already delivered a setback to easing hopes and any upside surprise on consumer prices would challenge bets for a rate cut as soon as September.

Forecasts are for a rise of 0.4% in April for both the headline and core CPI, with the annual pace of core inflation slowing just a tick to 5.5%.

Later Monday, the Federal Reserve’s survey of loan officers will draw an unusual amount of attention as markets seek to gauge the impact of regional banking stress on lending.

“The survey should point to further broad-based tightening in bank lending standards,” said Bruce Kasman, head of economic research at JPMorgan.

“Continued stress in the banking system does, of course, increase concern that a disruptive financial market event is on the horizon,” he added. “Though our analysis suggests that the impact of a credit tightening against an otherwise healthy backdrop tends to be limited.”

Caution made for a slow start in markets and MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) edged up 0.7%, while Japan’s Nikkei (.N225) eased 0.6%.

Chinese blue chips (.CSI300) gained 1.2% ahead of data on trade and inflation due later in the week.

EUROSTOXX 50 futures added 0.2%, while FTSE futures were closed for a holiday.

S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures were both flat, after jumping on Friday in the wake of Apple’s (AAPL.O) upbeat results.

While the S&P 500 is up almost 8% for the year so far, all of that is due to just five mega stocks which have collectively risen by 29% so far this year and trade at a 49% premium to the rest of the index.

Bond markets were still stinging from the strong payrolls report with U.S. two-year yields up at 3.93% after briefly getting as low at 3.657% last week.

Not helping has been the risk of a U.S. government default with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Sunday warning of a possible crisis should Congress not raise the debt ceiling.

Futures imply a near 90% chance the Fed will keep rates steady at its next meeting in June, and a 75% probability of a cut in September.

The market is still pricing in at least one more hike from the European Central Bank, while the Bank of England is widely expected to lift its rates by a quarter point on Thursday. , .

The diverging outlook on rates has underpinned the euro and pound, with the latter hitting a one-year high on the U.S. dollar last week. The euro was holding at $1.1034 on Monday, just short of its recent top of $1.1096.

“While it is premature to get too ‘beared up’ on the dollar until a clearer peak in U.S. rates is seen, the U.S. banking sector travails that have no easy/costless solutions, continue to make for a mildly bearish medium-term story,” said Alan Ruskin, head of global FX strategy at Deutsche Bank.

“Certainly it imposes more growth constraints and a greater stagflationary bias than for major competing economies.”

The dollar has fared better on the yen as the Bank of Japan remains the only central bank in the developed world to not have tightened policy. The dollar stood at 134.82 yen , with the euro at 148.75 and not far from its recent 15-year peak of 151.55.

The prospect of a pause in U.S. rate hikes has been a boon for non-yielding gold which was holding at $2,021 an ounce after nearing a record high last week.

Oil prices have been going the other way as fears of a global economic slowdown eclipsed planned output cuts to see U.S. crude shed more than 7% last week.

Brent was last up 14 cents at $75.44 a barrel, while U.S. crude added 16 cents to $71.50 per barrel.

Ron DeSantis was already fretting in 2018 about how he could disagree with Trump without alienating the MAGA base, old debate prep video shows

  • DeSantis was already worried about alienating the MAGA base in 2018, per an old debate prep video.
  • The video, obtained by ABC News, shows DeSantis answering mock questions on disagreements with Trump.
  • DeSantis is heard saying how he would frame the answer so he would not “piss off” Trump’s voters.

In 2018, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was already worrying about how he could publicly disagree with then-President Donald Trump without annoying and alienating the MAGA base, a new video shows.

video published on Sunday by ABC News shows Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz helping DeSantis prep for debates, for DeSantis’ first gubernatorial campaign in 2018.

Gaetz posed him a mock question, asking: “Is there any issue upon which you disagree with President Trump?”

DeSantis, who was a member of Congress at the time, answered: “Obviously, there is. I mean, I voted contrary to him in the Congress.”

“I have to frame it in a way that’s not going to piss off all of his voters,” DeSantis added.

DeSantis then explained that he would respond to such a question by saying he would do what he thinks is “right” and support Trump’s agenda, per ABC’s video.

“If I have a disagreement, I talk to him in private,” the governor said in the video.

The video is part of nearly two and a half hours of tapes that ABC has obtained.

The leaked debate tapes demonstrate how DeSantis was concerned about not alienating a significant portion of GOP voters long before he showed interest in running as the Republican opponent to Trump in 2024.

DeSantis has not officially announced a 2024 presidential run, but he will likely be Trump’s biggest rival for the GOP presidential ticket if he chooses to. And while DeSantis has held back from publicly criticizing Trump, Trump has launched numerous attacks on the Florida governor.

Trump’s endorsed DeSantis in 2018, but said in March that he regrets making the endorsement. Trump has also given DeSantis nicknames like “Ron DeSanctimonius” and “RINO Globalist”the former of which DeSantis has tried to brush off.

In April, Trump’s camp also tried to force Ron DeSantis to resign as governor and formally declare a 2024 run, accusing the governor of “taxpayer-funded globetrotting.”

A representative of DeSantis did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment sent outside regular business hours.

Harden makes winning 3 in OT, 76ers tie series with Celtics

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — James Harden hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in overtime and scored 42 points to help the Philadelphia 76ers stave off a wild Boston Celtics comeback in a 116-115 victory on Sunday that evened their playoff series at 2-2.

Marcus Smart’s potential winner was a tick too late and the Celtics now head home for Tuesday’s Game 5. The 76ers are guaranteed to return home for Game 6 on Thursday.

Smart and Jayson Tatum keyed a Celtics rally from 15 points down with 2 minutes left in the third quarter in hopes of seizing control of the series.

The Sixers were on the brink of defeat numerous times over the final 17 minutes, none more than when Joel Embiid crashed into Smart on a driving, one-handed bank shot with 1:49 left but was whistled for an offensive foul. The play was reviewed and the call stood. Boston kept its 112-111 lead with 1:49 left in OT.

Embiid, the NBA MVP, kept his composure and eventually got to the line to sink two free throws with 59 seconds left and the season in the balance.

Embiid had 34 points and 13 rebounds. Harden added nine assists and eight rebounds.

Tatum struggled to score early but finished with 24 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and four blocks. Jaylen Brown scored 23 points and Smart had 21.

They went to overtime tied 107-all after Smart was short on a 3 at the horn on one of the few clutch shots Boston missed in the fourth quarter.

Boston’s fun began in the period when Smart and Brown buried consecutive 3-pointers and Tatum attacked the rim for a bucket that wiped out an eight-point hole in 90 seconds. Al Horford put them ahead 98-90 — on a possession that started on the other end when Tyrese Maxey had his shot blocked — and shimmied for the crowd as boos rained on him.

Yes, the 76ers had home court but fans tensed up as memories all those second-round exits since 2001 stirred inside the building. Smart and Malcolm Brogdon hit consecutive 3s for a 105-100 lead.

But it was P.J. Tucker, the heart and guts of the Sixers, who again did the dirty work on a defensive rebound a bucket. He made the free throw with 1:05 left and the tie game gave them new life.

Good Game James showed up in Game 4 for the 76ers and Embiid played more like the MVP he was in the regular season than the banged-up edition with a sprained right knee of the last two games.

Harden played in Game 1 like he was still the MVP in Houston and dropped 45 points to spur the upset road victory. Then, his game disappeared and he played two of the worst games of his career. Harden’s 5-for-28 combined shooting in Games 2 and 3 was worst effort for him over any two-game span in his career — regular season or playoffs.

The best the 76ers could do ahead of Game 4 was hope for a productive Harden.

Philly got him.

Harden hit all three 3s in the first half and scored 21 points, five more than his Game 3 total. Embiid was as potent as he needed to perform and had 19 points and 11 boards to give the 76ers a 59-50 lead.

Boston suffered this time from a lack of star power. Tatum missed his first eight shots before he scored a bucket just before the half, just one woeful effort in a half where the Celtics shot 38% from the floor.

TIP-INS

Celtics: Horford joined Tatum as Celtics with one basket in the first half. Brown tried to help with a 7-of-11 effort for 16 points.

76ers: Julius Erving was in the house. … Embiid and Harden are the first Sixers teammates with 30 points each in a playoff game since Embiid and Seth Curry did it in June 2021 against Atlanta.

Engineers frustrated with rails even as others get sick time

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tens of thousands of engineers remain frustrated with the lack of paid sick time and the demands railroads like BNSF are making in negotiations despite the deals that have been made this year for most of the other rail unions.

The lack of sick time and other quality of life concerns about the demanding schedules train crews work took center stage in the negotiations last fall that reached the brink of a strike before Congress intervened and blocked a walkout.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union says the railroads are still asking for too much in return for sick time instead of just providing the basic benefit it believes workers are entitled to.

“They want to talk the money out of our pocket somewhere else and give it back to us in the form of sick time,” said Rob Cunningham, one of the BLET’s general chairmen who is leading the negotiations with BNSF.

The BLET’s frustrations generally extend to all the major freight railroads, but Cunningham said BNSF seemed to be acting especially “hard headed” in talks last week.

The Fort Worth, Texas, based railroad is in the spotlight this weekend because it is owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway and thousands of adoring shareholders filled an arena in Omaha, Nebraska, Saturday to listen to him answer questions.

Buffett didn’t face any questions about the way BNSF is treating its workers, but Buffett takes an extremely hands-off approach to Berkshire’s companies and largely lets them run themselves. In the past, he has declined to get involved in labor negotiations at subsidiaries.

“You would think with something as easy as paid sick time, he could just say: ’Do it. We need to do this. This is the right thing to do,” Cunningham said about Buffett, who is also a major philanthropist.

“But clearly he doesn’t practice what he preaches,” Cunningham said.

BNSF spokeswoman Lena Kent said the railroad has already reached deals to provide sick leave to more than 6,000 of its employees at eight of its unions, and “it is our intention to ultimately have agreements in place covering our entire scheduled workforce.”

Across the industry, CSX has led the way by reaching agreements with most of its unions on sick time. Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific have also announced several sick time deals. Most of these deals provide workers with four days of paid sick time and give them the option to convert three leave days into sick time to give workers a total of seven sick days a year.

“CSX is determined to ensure that all employees feel valued, respected, appreciated and operate as one team,” spokeswoman Sheriee Bowman said.

Most of those other deals that have been announced focus on smaller unions that do maintenance and repair work along the rails and generally have more regular schedules. The conductors’ union — the Transportation Division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers — has reached deals with NS and CSX that include five paid sick days and the option to convert two personal leave days.

The Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division Union that represents track maintenance workers has been able to reach sick time deals with UP, CSX and Norfolk Southern, but they have had to fight to get that benefit without making concessions.

The engineers’ union has yet to reach a single sick time agreement at any of the railroads.

One of the key remaining concerns for the BLET is that even where the railroads seem willing to give engineers sick time, the railroads generally still want to hold workers accountable for missing work under their strict attendance policies. So even if workers do get sick time, they may not feel free to use it because they would still be penalized for missing work although CSX has said it won’t punish workers for taking sick time.

“We’re going to have locomotive engineers and conductors making a choice of whether to work sick and handle some of the most dangerous items that any transportation group handles, but they’re going to work sick or be subject to attendance policies,” said Mark Wallace, BLET’s second-highest official.

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders who has been pressuring the railroads to give their workers sick time and tried unsuccessfully to require it when Congress was voting on the contract in December said he has been encouraged by the progress the industry has made so far.

Already more that one third of all rail workers industrywide have gained paid sick time since the start of the year. On CSX and Norfolk Southern, the portion of workers who now have sick time is closer to two-thirds.

But more needs to be done, and without concessions, the Vermont independent said.

“This is something that should have been done years ago and time is long overdue for those companies to provide those benefits right now,” Sanders said.

Sanders said all the publicity the railroads received last fall for refusing to provide sick time forced their hands.

“At the end of the day, what the rail industry understood is it’s just very hard to defend record breaking profits and massive stock buybacks and then saying they don’t have enough money to do what is the right and decent thing for workers and that is guarantee them paid sick days,” Sanders said.

SMART-TD President Jeremy Ferguson said he hopes the agreements his union has reached with CSX and Norfolk Southern to secure five sick days will become a model for deals with the rest of the railroads. But he is also focused on trying to get conductors relief from the stringent attendance policies that have put them on call 24-7 in recent years.

“That’s where we really butted heads with the carriers,” Ferguson said.

The deal SMART-TD reached with Norfolk Southern last week tries to ensure conductors will know their days off in advance. Norfolk Southern spokesman Thomas Crosson said those new rules should help because conductors will generally work six days in a row followed by two days off, and each week’s schedule will be more predictable.
